A Simple Budget That Works: My Two-Budget System

Most budgeting methods fail because they are too complicated. This simple budget for beginners uses just two numbers and has worked for me for years.

I have tried detailed spreadsheets with dozens of categories. They never lasted. What works for me is almost embarrassingly simple: two fixed monthly budgets.

Budget one: fuel

Transport is my most predictable variable cost, so it gets its own number. I decide it at the start of the month and do not touch the rest of my money for it.

Budget two: everything else

Food, small purchases, simple leisure — all of it comes out of one second budget. If I want something, it has to fit. No borrowing from next month.

Why it works

  • Two numbers are easy to remember.
  • Fixed limits remove daily decisions.
  • Whatever is not budgeted is saved or invested automatically.

Leisure stays simple and cheap: walks, time with people, doing things myself. I do not feel deprived. I feel in control.
